The John Marshall Law School offers the nation's first and only Master of Laws (LL.M.) program in Employee Benefits for attorneys and a Master of Science (M.S.) program in Employee Benefits for non-attorneys. In addition to assisting the Center Director with her ministerial duties, Barry is an integral part of the planning of specialized programs, seminars and symposiums offered to students and of the legal outreach offered to the outside benefits community. As an adjunct professor, Barry teaches employee benefits and federal income tax classes, as well as other areas of the law of interest, and he represents the Center in various capacities, including faculty coach for inter-scholastic moot court competitions and other important John Marshall functions.

The American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries maintains an Education and Examination program, which is integral to its mission. As a Consultant, Barry developed all academic program material and provided other services for the QPFC-2 examination, which is part of the Qualified Plan Financial Consultant (QPFC) professional designation. Program materials include publications and other reading matter, examinations to validate the study of the material, and course syllabi. Other service activities include process modification, candidate responses, exam grading and analysis, and training, and other services ASPPA might require from time to time.

Donald Delves was asked to be the lead author for a CCH publication, “Accounting for Compensation Arrangements (2006).” The main emphasis for the new edition were the rules for accounting of stock options under FAS 123R. I assisted Don and other technical assistants in understanding the new rules, detailing the unresolved issues, and writing the first drafts of several of the chapters.

Barry served as an actuarial, legal and tax consultant on special projects, as needed. Primary responsibilities included assisting the Chief Actuary in developing client bulletins, helping the actuarial staff understand the legal parameters within which they must exercise their professional responsibilities, keeping the office informed of legislative agendas and litigation trends, and researching specific issues as they arose. Helped to organize the agenda for the firm’s weekly information and discussion meetings.

Barry was an Associate in the Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation Group. For existing firm clients, I was responsible for ensuring that their existing benefit plans complied with federal and state laws and that they continued to meet all business goals of the sponsoring employer. Was also responsible for ensuring compliance during corporate transactions such as mergers and acquisitions.
